What Makes a Great Photo?

1. Composition - Fill the Frame! It adds context to a shot.

2. Lighting - Direction, Colour Coordination/ Balance (key aspects)

Mistakes Photographers Make When Starting Out

When I bought my first DSLR camera, I read my entire manual. After then, I felt like an expert in the field. While it was a great way of learning, I had the wrong impressions which led to some pretty embarrassing mistakes.

1. I didn't use flash then - I thought of it as a harsh and flattening light that was falling directly onto my subject.

Correction: I just needed to use an external flash which is more flexible and can adjust accordingly.

2. The Wrong ISO - According to photography manuals; the higher the ISO, the more digital noise there would be, therefore resulting to a poor image quality. So naturally, I always use to keep my ISO at 100-200 max. Guess What?.......... Some of my photos were under-exposed.

Correction: Adjust your ISO to suit the atmosphere you are in. For sunny days, an ISO of 100-300 is perfect. For bleaky days or indoors, you can increase from 400 and further on.

3. Never Backed Up - Lost all of my photos to a horrifying hard drive failure.

Correction: Always back up elsewhere besides your personal computer. There are a lot of options now like OneDrive, Dropbox, etc.

1. Go Close - Always try to full the frame of your camera. You can use a wide angle zoom lens.

2. Capture the Moment - Have your camera ready to capture unexpected moments

5 Tips for Great Indoor Photos

1. Take control of the White Balance setting on your Camera - Start off with automatic white balance then move on to manual to adjust.

2. Use Natural Light - Place subject close to a window for better lighting.

3. Flash or Natural Light? - Flash indoor is needed only when there is not much natural light available.

4. Utilize only 1 Light Source - Once there is sufficient natural light available, all artificial lights in the room should be taken off.

5. Remove any Background Distractions - Distractions or clutter can spoil the overall mood of a photograph.
